How to Replace or Change a Garage Door

There are several reasons why you might need to replace your damaged garage door with a new one. Some are due to dents from severe weather conditions like a hailstone, physical impacts from soccer games, hitting your door accidentally, constant opening and closing of the door resulting in its wear and tear, etc.

The garage door is much more than just an entrance into your garage. So in order to increase the curb appeal and maintain the value of your property, it’s needful to immediately replace garage doors that are faulty with new ones to prevent further damage over time.

7 Steps on How to Replace Garage Door

1.    Release the Garage Door Tension

The first step you will take to replace the garage door is to release the tension spring. This should be done when the door is in its upward position. Start by clamping the tension spring shaft with adjustable-locking pliers to hold the weight of the door. Wedge the pliers against the header above the door to enable you to loosen the screw holding the spring winding cone.

Loosen each of the springs one at a time using a steel rod to hold the cone in place and the other to screw the cone. Do this meticulously to avoid damage or personal injury.

2.    Disconnect the Current Door From the Garage Door Opener

Once you have succeeded in releasing the garage tension door. Pull the red emergency handle to disconnect the door from the opener to enable you to move it manually. Then release the sectional garage door panels by removing the hinges that hold the panels. After this, loosen the bolts on the door frame to disconnect the panel from its track.

3.    Install the Sectional Garage Door Panels

Start the installation of your new garage door by placing a support bar along the top panel to hold it in place. Secure the bar of the panel into the pilot holes using a screw. Then attach the hinges to the top of each panel and the axle supports to the top and bottom of the panels. When completed, check its level to ensure it’s balanced. Repeat this process until all the panels are properly placed.

4.    Secure Hinges and Install Tracks

Line up each of the three hinges in the center of the top edge of the panel and screw them all in. Install the track and be sure the wheels are lined correctly. Locate the panel axel at the bottom and attach the door cable to the hook provided, then fasten the bottom bracket to the wall.

5.    Attach Spring Assembly and Bolt to the Track

Assemble all parts that hold the spring together, with the door’s ceiling acting as a support. Fasten it to the track. Let it rest on the vertical track you fixed and attach it to the other end of the ceiling. Then place the bolt into the curved track section and ensure that the bolt threads are within the track and tighten them together.

6.    Install Springs, Torsion Rod and Pulleys

You will install the springs by joining the spring anchors to the springs and fastening the spring locking cone. After this, bolt these two springs to the header bracket. Then get the torsion rod, glide it into the holes by the side header brackets, and fasten the pulleys on the end of each rod.

7.    Attach Cable And Tighten Springs

Fasten the cable to the pulley wheel and roll the pulley wheel so that the cable will be taut over the wheel. Ensure you secure the wheel to the header bracket and tighten it properly. To tighten the springs, attach locking pliers to the steel rods outside the bracket and tighten the springs with a steel rod using the manufacturer’s manual as a guide. Remove the pliers from the torsion rod once the spring has reached its accurate tension.

Conclusion

It’s very crucial you replace garage doors when they are faulty to hinder further damages. Failure to do so might reduce the value and the curb appeal of your entire investment. You can follow these easy DIY steps or employ the help of a professional to help you replace or change your damaged garage doors and keep your investment valuable and intact.
